Airmail Envelope Quilt - Part 3:  Piecing the Top
Hello and Welcome back!  Did you get your 30 blocks created?  Now comes the fun part...let's put this quilt together!

From these lovely Airmail fabrics from Moda Fabrics.
Background Fabric:
General Cutting Instructions for Background Fabric:

  • Cut TWENTY - 6 1/2 inch squares for setting the blocks on point

  • Cut FIVE - 10 inch squares and cut TWICE on the diagonal to make TWENTY triangles (you will have two extra triangles)

  • Cut TWO - 5 1/2 inch squares and cut ONCE on the diagonal for the FOUR corner triangles


There are TWENTY - 6 1/2 inch Setting Squares.
There are EIGHTEEN Setting Triangles.
There are FOUR Corner Triangles.

**NOTE:  The above cutting instructions may be used for all solid or non-directional background fabrics.

This is the background fabric I chose for my quilt; Airmail Cupid Arrows Multi.

Since this is a directional fabric and my blocks are set on point in my quilt, this took some creative cutting to keep the arrows moving on the diagonal as in the fabric swatch.  (These instructions are detailed below in highlighted yellow.)
Cutting the Setting Squares from Directional Fabric:

I cut 9 1/4 inch width of fabric (WOF) strips to cut my 6 1/2 inch squares...

Then I cut my blocks on the diagonal...

This did yield extra triangles that I saved for another project as they are NOT the correct size for the setting triangles.

There are TWENTY - 6 1/2 inch setting squares in this quilt.
Cutting the Setting Triangles from Directional Fabric:

I cut FIVE - 10 inch squares and then cut TWICE on the diagonal as shown.

I had TWO extra triangles.

There are EIGHTEEN setting triangles in this quilt.
Cutting the Corner Triangles from Directional Fabric:

Cut TWO - 5 1/2 inch squares and cut ONCE on the diagonal.

There are FOUR corner triangles in this quilt.
Note how these are cut in opposite directions.  This allows the arrows in the corners to point in the same direction as the setting squares.
Sewing the Center of the Quilt:

Layout the blocks on point on your design wall, on a flat table or the floor and add the Setting Triangles and Corner Triangles.

I set the blocks at random and then moved one or two to more evenly distribute the colors.

Notice how all the arrows in the background fabric are pointing in the same direction, on the diagonal.  This does require extra care and effort but I feel the result provides more interest and movement in the finished quilt.

Sew the TEN rows together, starting at the upper left hand corner and moving diagonally downward toward the lower right corner.

Add the Corner Triangles and trim square the center of your quilt as needed.

Here is the center of my pieced quilt and ready to add the border fabric.
Border Fabric:
General cutting instructions for the Border Fabric:

  • Cut SEVEN - 5 inch border strips.

Here is my pretty border fabric.

This, too, is a directional fabric and requires specialized cutting and sewing.

I cut the top and bottom border strips by length of fabric (LOF). 

I first cut off the selvages. 

Then I cut TWO - 5 inch length of fabric strips.

For the side borders, I laid the remaining fabric, single width. 

I cut THREE width of fabric (WOF) 5 inch strips from the left side and THREE width of fabric strips from the right side.

By cutting the fabric this way, I could allow for my 1/4 inch seam allowance using the red stripe in the fabric and keep the cute postage stamp motifs whole on the inside edge of my border.

(The wide center strip, under the ruler, is extra fabric.)
Sewing on the Borders:

Sew the top border strip to the top of the quilt, paying careful attention to the direction of the fabrics.

Sew the bottom border in the same manner.

Press the top and bottom border seams outward.

Piece the side borders together carefully to match the red lines.

Press seams open to lay flat.

Sew on the side strips, matching the red lines wherever possible.  This is one of the bottom corners of my quilt.  Notice how my fabrics line up and will look "upright" in my quilt.

Press outward toward the borders.

I really like the way this looks with all the directional fabrics aligned.

    About 10 yrs. After watching Alex Anderson, Quilt in a Day and Fons and Porter TV shows I got excited and wanted to learn how to make these beautiful creations. My daughter and I took a quilt class and I was off. I have 1 granddaughter and if I make her one more quilt; her bed will look like the Princess and the Pea. I love making quilts about books and give her the book and the quilt. I find myself making them without patterns. I gave her a little sewing machine for Christmas. She loves watching her Mother and I sewing when we get together. My 2nd quilt was a log cabin, my DH said why don't you try something easier to start with - well boy did I surprise him. I'm so glad I glad I have quilts to pass down through our friends and family. A quilt never dies, just keeps on keeping people warm. ncjeepster@aol.com

    Both of my grandmothers were quilters so I got started really young so I have probably been quilting for 50 years. I just retired this month and am looking forward to lots of more time to quilt and spending time with my quilting friends!

    my aunt babysat me from the time i was five years old. i would sit at her feet and watch her handcut fabric pieces and handquilt them into quilts. she taught me how to hand stitch 9 patch squares together by hand for my doll bed when i was 6 years old. so, i have been quilting for 51 years janicelashley@gmail.com

    I had to take the 7th grade sewing home ec class...over 40 years ago! Yikes! Didn't like it though. I guess I really started sewing softies and quilts about 15 years ago and decided that was much more fun :)

    I have been sewing & quilting since 1956; I learned in Home Ec. Such fun; so many funny things happened; A student sewed her long hair to her apron strings! Another sewed her back skirt seam perfectly except there was no thread in the bobbin! And, when we put the backing on the large quilt project from the class we sewed one corner to the other. Great memories though!

    I've been sewing a long time and the first 'helping' to quilt was threading needles for Mom when I was 5 or 6. The most loved quilt I made I think is the one my grandaughter would sit on the rug by the dryer waiting for when it had to be washed...it is still loved even though it is rather worn...

    I did my first piecing (one giant hunk of crazy patchwork out of old jeans) in the early 70s while I was in college, but made my first quilt for my firstborn niece in 1977. She now has two children of her own and still treasures her "star blankie."

    My mother taught me how to sew by hand as a young child and later on her sewing machine. I made my own clothes, much of my children's, and several household items. I only started quilting since 1999 and I've been hooked ever since!

    I started sewing in high school when my theatre teacher assumed that because I was Mormon I knew how to use a sewing machine. And then when I was taking care of my sister she was sewing vicariously through me so that's when I really started to sew. Because of her my dad bought me my first machine for my 21st bday. I started quilting a few years ago when HQM had a QAL because why not? That was the Wonky Star QAL so that was... August 2011? But I just now have that one on the frame. Funny how time does that, right?

    I learned to sew as a girl. My mother sewed all of our dancing recital costumes. My maternal grandfather was a master tailor all of his life and grandma was a fine seamstress. When I retired six years ago I joined a sewing organization committed to helping the poor in our community, sewing clothing, quilts. This is were I started to learn quilting. I am pretty new to this craft and love to learn new patterns and tips. I love the Airmail fabrics! This pattern is great. Thank you for bring it to us to learn.

    My oldest sister started me hand sewing when I was very young. Hated getting stuck with the needle so told her I'd never sew again. Well, she's gone (cancer 2 years) and here I'm stitching for about 25 years and loving it. She'd be proud I like to think!

    My mother and I made a whole cloth quilt for my sister about 39 years ago, and I made an applique quilt for a friend when she had a baby around the same time, then there was a gap of about 35 years. I have just been back in the saddle for about 3 years now. I love your newsletter!

    My mother taught me to sew my own clothes when I was young. After high school I quit sewing until I started sewing a few years ago.

    I started sewing as a young homemaker. My mother-in-law taught me. I made garments for my family. I tried a quilting class 30 years ago and it was a bad experience. I now realize that I had a bad instructor. My sister-in-law convinced me to try again Three years ago. She helped me make a king sized quilt that was all small half square triangles. It was fun and I have been quilting ever since.

    Although I took a sewing class in grade school, and despite having a mother who was an excellent seamstress & a grandmother who quilted with the same group of ladies at church for 70 years (truly), I didn't start quilting until I was nearly 40, which was 12 years ago. So much time wasted. And what did I daydream about, before it was fabric and quilt patterns?

    Just sent my niece an invitation to join your site. I have only been quilting for a year. I have two quilts going on right now, a hexie and a cathedral window. I am surprised I never took up this quilting before. Retirement has its good moments for learning new things.

    I've been quilting like a kwazeee person for 3 years...made a promise to myself I had to finish all my UFOs before I could start anything new...3 out of 10 to go! But...it is still OK to buy MORE fabric!

    I've been sewing since I was in middle and high school. I started quilting when in college. So around 40 years. In the last 5 or 6 years I've really left it take over my life - I love the creativity of quilting and the new fabrics are so tempting and fun to play with.

    I started quilting around 2003. Used an old treadle Singer sewing machine my husband fixed so it ran on electricity. But it only did straight stitch, no zigzag so finally got a modern sewing machine.

    My first quilt was when I was 8 years old. My mom helped me but I did the sewing. My seam allowances were so crooked and in some place so close the the edge that the quilt started to fall apart the first time we washed it. I still loved it though and continued to see and I have been ever since.

    I started quilting with my aunt in my late teens. She taught me how to quilt by hand and create my own patterns. About a year ago, I started learning how to machine quilt as the eyes and nimble fingers began to fade--so hand quilting - off and on for around 40 years--machine quilting - 1 year
