Building of My Personal Quilting Studio

There’s a quiet moment that happens when you realize your life is about to change, not with a dramatic announcement, but with a slow, steady knowing. For me, that moment didn’t come all at once. It arrived in between early work shifts, long days on my feet, and the hum of fluorescent lights that had been the backdrop of my working life for years. Somewhere in that routine, I began to imagine something softer, slower, something easier.

Transitioning from full-time retail small business owner into semi-retirement isn’t just about working fewer hours—it’s about redefining my time. Retail teaches resilience, patience, and the art of showing up no matter what, especially when you are a small business owner. But it can also take a toll, physically and mentally. As I started to consider what the next chapter might look like, I found myself drawn more and more to the quiet comfort of being at home on our country property.

What began as an idea soon started to feel like a calling. I knew, though, that I still wanted to contribute something meaningful to the quilting community. That’s when the vision of a personal home quilting studio truly began to take root.

This transition hasn’t been about leaving one life behind, but about blending two worlds—holding onto the structure and purpose that work provided while making room for rest, creativity, and intention. Building a quilting studio at home has become more than just a project; it’s a symbol of that shift—a way to honor where I’ve been while stitching together where I’m going next.

Of course, dreaming about a space and actually creating one are two very different things. Once I allowed myself to take the idea seriously, practical questions quickly followed. Where would the studio go? How much space did I really need? What could I repurpose, and what would I need to invest in? These weren’t just logistical decisions—they were part of redefining what “enough” looks like in this new season of life.

I quickly realized my small, shared home office and sewing space wouldn’t be enough for what I envisioned—but I also didn’t want a large, impersonal business office. I wanted something intentional: a space that felt inspiring, functional, and entirely my own.

Follow along with me on this journey as I create a space stitched together with purpose, creativity, and heart.

Construction Begins! The team is digging out to form up the concrete footings.

Back story: We bought our property almost six years ago. We have used this open-sided building to park our trucks and a trailer. It was the perfect building to remodel for my studio.

The old metal roof has been removed. It did not have any wood under the old metal, only plastic insulation sheeting that the Northern Flickers had destroyed. New sheets of wood and a Snap-Tight roof is going on.

A trench was dug for electrical from the nearby building.

Oopsie! They hit the water pipe that feeds the house. It was not their fault. We know the water pipe is old and fragile and needs replacing.  Another project on the list for this summer.

Front metal siding was installed.  The original red metal siding, on the original three sides, is sun bleached.  Rather than painting the whole building, I decided it was more efficient to go with white on the front.  I think it adds character!
