  A lady in my neighborhood asked me to help out in her fabric shop. All I did was put the bolts away after they fabric was cut, but it was enough. I got hooked.

  My mom can make anything! I started sewing (outside of homec class) after I graduated graduate school. My mom bought me a machine because I wanted to make clothes - 5 years and lots of quilts later, I'm finally making a shirt next weekend with my mom :)

  When I was living in Tahiti, French Polynesia, I saw a show about Tifaifai, the traditional Tahitian patchwork, and I fell in love with patchwork! Then I went to Hawaii and Canada, and learned to quilt

  Five or six years ago my family started spending a week or two in Sisters, Oregon, every July, and I learned about the famous Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show. After seeing all those beautiful quilts and spending lots of time admiring gorgeous fabrics, I finally took the plunge a couple of years ago and made my first quilt.

  I have always loved quilts and had wanted to make one for a long time. In fact I started one many years ago and found it was too slow for me with having to cut out each piece with scissors. For years I never had the time but when I got laid off from my job I started reading quilting blogs and realized that people were now cutting their quilts out with rotary cutters, so I guess you could say I was inspired by the rotary cutter.

  Somehow I stumbled across a Moda Jelly Roll (Chez Moi). I loved that fabric and it's form so much I decided to make my first quilt, and I was hooked.

  My maternal grandmother inspired me to sew. She made clothing for my mom and my mom's dolls when she was a child. My grandmother was making patchwork quilts by the time I was in Jr. High, and I wanted to learn how to do that, too. She taught my sister and me.

  I took sewing classes because I wanted to learn how to make my own quilt versus buying them at a craft show. Now I enjoy making 18 inch doll bedding and clothes to donate to raise money for charities and to give away to kids!

  I had a friend (who is gone now) who had the most beautiful "blankets" on all of her beds. She gave me the fabric, pattern, and lots of lessons to get my first quilt done. Been hooked ever since and can't seem to get enough of those "blankets" that I learned are called quilts!

  I started sewing when I was 10 years old. My grandmother would teach me on the weekends and I still use her sewing machine table and pin cushion. Every time I sit to sew I think about her and can feel her presence. It is wonderful! I am now teaching others and love when my little kids (3.5 years and 17 months old) want to help. I can't wait until they are creating things on their own!

  I started quilting after having a stroke. It was the log cabin block. My doctor encouraged me to stick with it after quilting helped some of my neuro test results.

  When I retired from our library one of my co-workers made me a beautiful memory quilt. When we moved to Minnesota I visited the wonderful local quilt shop and a whole new world of passion, purpose, and friendships opened up. And quilting is so fun!

  My daughter inspired me to quilt. I grew up watching all the women in my family, Mom, grandma's, Aunts, great aunts, cousins, all sitting around wooden horses supporting the quilt they would all work on together. I could join them and listen to the gossip as all our hands were quilting the same quilt. The great aunts, aunts, grandma's, and some cousins have all gone but the importance of passing along the skill of quilting to my little girl keeps me inspired.

  Sewing inspiration came from my mom, when I was age 9. She gently and patiently (cajoled actually) to use a machine and I learned to make dresses for me and eventually made my sisters wedding dress when I was 16. Quilting came from two Aunties and a sister, who just kept encouraging me to "keep the art alive in our family" So I have. Thank you all for sharing and your tutorials are all over my sewing/quilting space.

  My Grandma was in a nursing facility and I did a square in a square with maroon and pink. I started enjoying looking for cool fabric in an old Ben Franklin store I would let mom shop and just stayed in the fabric section until she was done shopping. This behavior was a benefit to us both!

  My inspiration to start sewing was looking at clothes in boutiques and observing the quality and cost. I decided I could make clothes in the styles, colors, and prints I wanted. (But I also still love shopping!)

  The thrust for me to learn how to quilt was a quilt top that my three sons great grandmother hand pieced. It was a very very large double circle wedding and I carried it from house to house...including England and back. Four years ago I started hand quilting it and finally finished it in Jan. 2015.   My grandmother made the most beautiful quilts and she was my inspiration when I made my first quilt when I was about 12 years old. I love quilting, but life got in the way for many years and there just wasn't enough time or money to persue my passion. I'm back in my happy place now though - currently making each of my 5 grandchildren a quilt!

  I've always wanted a creative outlet. There are many musicians in my family and so I naturally thought my talent was music, but after much soul searching, I found my artistic talent seemed to be with a different medium...fabric! I've never looked back since!

  I taught myself to sew when I was 20 years old. My interest was always clothing but I gradually shifted to quilting a few years ago. I love fabric and quilting is such a relaxing thing for me and the feeling of accomplishment I have when I finish with a beautiful quilt is indescribable.

  My grandmother was a seamstress and taught me to sew. When my kids were finally grown I had the time to start sewing. A good friend took a beginners sewing class and I was so impressed I soon took one. And so it began.....

  God gave us these instincts to make things, to use our hands and out mind. My grandmother was a quilter and I loved watching her piece together all those little blocks together. So I guess I picked it up from her. My hands and mind has to stay busy and I love quilting and sewing.

  I became interested in quilting when my grandmother passed away almost 2 years ago. sadly I miss her. When my grandma passed away I found out that both my great grandmother's were quilters so I decided to carry on the tradition. I am still a Newby but I love learning new things and it brings me peace to sew and quilt.

  I did easy quilts when I was younger and life got involved,then my brother contacted me and asked me to make quilts for his two small daughters. I thought I would love to do it but my skills are out of shape. So I am learning and teaching myself. I am almost done with one of them. My brother has cancer and hope he gets to see his daughters enjoy the quilts.

  I had sewed since I was a child, had seen quilts my Mother and other family members had made then about 10 years bought a quilt magazine. I was inspired! I didn't start with "easy" quilts, just made the ones that inspired me. I have never stopped. This Christmas all my family will finally have a quilt I have made, including my 2 great grandchildren! To me a quilt is a memory stitched with love!

  I hadn't sewn for years. My oldest son passed away quite suddenly from undiagnosed heart problem. Starting quilting as it is a great way to wear all of his shirts at once. It will become my comfort quilt!

  I was inspired to learn quilting from a lady at church, she is 80 years old and quilting for more than 50 years. We mKe the small quilts for the needy of our community. They are for children and young adults mostly. I am always learning new techniques and patterns. I enjoy your site very much.

  My mama and great grandmother taught me to sew years ago. I made clothes for my children growing up and household items. But my cousin, Lolly, started the quilting spark with a rag quilt. Even though she is gone, i continue to love to. Sew and have added tote bags to my joy. I would love to add thiss collection to my pinwheel patterns.

  I dabbled just a tiny bit in sewing before I was married, but my real inspiration was when I was pregnant with my son. I sewed lots of cloth diapers and a pair of little pants for him. I have four children now and love to sew for them.

  150 million years ago I used to do counted cross stitch. In the same shopping center where I bought my supplies, there was a quilt shop. One look inside and I was hooked!

  My Grandma made the most beautiful quilts. She gave most of them to her church bazaars for fundraising. Her stitches were so perfect. I know I'll never be as good as she was, but it is fun to try.

  I started sewing at about 10 years old by cutting up old clothes and making clothes for my doll - always hand sewn as we did not own a sewing machine at that time. Have been sewing ever since.

  I always sewed and crafted, but in the back of my mind was always the idea that one day I'd try quilting. I went by a shop in New York City one day and they were offering a beginners class. I signed up and never looked back. The other crafts fell away as quilting became my main focus.

  I started quilting with my Grandma when I was 14. She bought me an applique quilt kit from Leewards and it took years to complete it. My Grandma then tought me to hand quilt. She actually did most of the work but that started it all.

  my mother inspired me to sew. When I was a child, my first sewing project was to make my brand new nephew a nightie. No pattern, and just scraps from moms sewing room. Needless to say, it never fit, or would fit any baby for that matter, but it was made with the same kind of love and enthusiasm that my mom showed me. My sister cherished it. I use patterns a lot more these days, but am definitely no stranger to making patterns on my own. Thanks mom, for your generosity, enthusiasm, and love for sewing!

  My mother does not let anything stop her in the needlework world. If she didn't know how she taught herself! She taught my sister and I how to do whatever we wanted at early ages.   My grandmother was an excellent seamstress. She made our dresses for all the special events- first communion, homecoming. When I was old enough, Mom and Dad enrolled me in sewing lessons. It took two sessions, but I've been in love with fabric and sewing machines ever since.

  My husband's Auntie inspired me. She quilted everything by hand. First she taught me how to make homemade bread. Then the next thing was to learn to quilt. Tragically she was taken from us before my first sew. I remember going to awe sit of a quilt shop and they were offering a beginners class. I drove right over and they had one spot left. I said " all I want to do is learn how to quilt". Quilting is know how I honor Auntie and the love she put into every stitch.

  I was in 4-H as a pre-teen and starting sewing then. I sort of dropped off the sewing way of life because I thought of it as my mom's hobby. When I had my daughters, and they wanted to learn how to sew a craft, I started getting back into sewing and realized just how much I enjoyed it and how much my daughters and I have together. They are now 11 & 12 and we have fun putting fabrics together and seeing what appeals to each of us.

  Up until 5 years ago I had never really sewn. My friend was a member of a club that made quilts for "at risk" children. I so loved seeing her quilts. So I asked her to show me how to do it. Five years and over 100 quilts later, I am now president of our club, and enjoying the camaraderie and support of the other members of our club. It is wonderful to provide comfort to these children through quilts.

  My grandma inspired me to sew. She would sew all the time, especially at night while she watched tv. Then one night I asked her to teach me to make some yo-yo's and she did with a real needle and thread . I couldn't believe she entrusted me with the needle and her fabrics. Best of all I was only 5 years old! She made me a quilt from all those yo-yo's which I slept under for years!! Now I'd like to make one for my daughter with those beautiful fabrics you're giving away

  I stared sewing in part because I wanted to be a super mom! My aunts made most of my clothes until I was 16 due to my mom working so much. My mom took me to the fabric store every Saturday to pick out fabric and patterns. This taught me how to use colors which I have used all through life.

  i started quilting because I wanted a quilt & they were too expensive. Plus I had always enjoyed making things. It is funny, because the quilt I wanted was an old one for $100! Have kicked myself several times over the years since

  A friend gifted another friend with a lovely quilt, made by her church group. I didn't even own a sewing machine, but said, "I can do that and I WANT TO!" Three sewing machines and 24+ years later, I still love it!

  I have always loved handmade quilts. This past winter I had the opportunity to take a sewing class and learn to sew. A few weeks ago we started working on quilts and now I can't stop! I love picking out the fabrics and the patterns!! And sewing is so relaxing (except when I have to undo my work!!LOL)!!

  I have been sewing since I was 8 years old starting with 4-H projects. I have always love quilts but didn't really start quilting until 2014 after my Mom passed away. I had been her caregiver and I needed something to help me cope with her loss, something creative and fulfilling. I made a couple of jelly roll quilts and it snowballed from there. I love the whole process and it just makes me happy!!

  When I was ten years old in the 1962, my mom was my inspiration. I asked all my neighbors for fabric and my mom taught me to hand sew a Nine Patch Block. Mom helped me put all the blocks together and Dad built a quilt frame. The best part is the whole family helped quilt, including my 2 older brothers. Lots of sore fingers later, we had a finished quilt and the best part is that I still have it today. Good memories!!

It wasn't until one of my close friends took up quilting that I realized, with a lot of encouragement from her, that I could make quilts too.   My MIL always buys random Christmas gifts and one year she gave me a sewing machine. I was dumbfounded as to why she would get me something like that!! I couldn't sew a stitch. But I used it off and on to do little things and then one year I had no idea what to get her for Christmas. She loves to go to auctions and thrift stores and is all the time bringing home old quilts. I loved them and still plot how to sneak them from her house undetected.

  When my grandson was born I wanted to make something special for him, so I started learning to quit. My first attempt wasn't pretty but he still uses it 5 years later and I have gotten better.

  My mother was a quilter when I was a small child. She passed away when I was 8. My mother-in-law was a quilter. She rekindled the instinct and the memories of my mother. She is the one that taught me how to quilt by hand. I enjoyed spending time at the quilting frames with her. Sweet memories. She too has passed. If feel I am keeping alive the memory of both of those precious ladies in my life.

  I STARTED DRESSMAKING IN MY EARLY 20'S AND AFTER A FEW YEARS HAD SO MANY SCRAPS AS WE ALL KNOW HOW HARD IT IS TO THROW AWAY A PIECE OF FABRIC BIGGER THAN 2 INCHES. SO I STARTED QUILTING I AM AT THE MOMENT PARTED FROM MY MACHINE SO AM HAND SEWING 1 INCH BIG HEXAGONS INTO DIAMONDS THAT CONTAIN 36 HEXAGONS FOR MY DAUGHTER. PS I NO LONGER MAKE CLOTHES; QUILTS ARE TOTALLY ADDICTIVE.

  It's actually a sad story. I started to sew again 4 and a half years ago when my dad was diagnosed with cancer. because it was the only thing that could completely shut my brain off and stop thinking about it for a longer period of time. Before then I only sewed when I was in middle school and loved it, but never picked it up as a hobby until those said 4 and a half years ago. Sadly he lost the battle, but my sewing love stayed and I met so many amazing new people and made a bunch of new friends! Thanks for your giveaway!

  I was inspired to start quilting because my mother-in-law has a terminal illness and lives far away from us. I wanted to give her something that was like a bright, cheery, hug from us any time she needed it. My aunt is a very accomplished quilter and my mother made hand-tied quilts (comforters) for all of us so it's in my blood. Mom's gone now, so it's my turn to cover the family in quilts!   My grandmother quilted until the day she passed away. She made the most beautiful quilts and they were all hand quilted. She showed me how to make the tiny stitches and to keep the even and straight. I love sewing and have found a passion for quilting that I hope that would meet her approval.

  i just loved to sit and watch my Grandmother and her quilting ladies make quilts at the little church in my home town. Sometimes she would put up her quilt frame and let us girls, my two sisters and me, help her tie off a quilt she was working on. I could have only been around 6 yrs old. I have always wanted to make quilts as good as she did. I hope I am making her proud as I try to make my quilts.

  When my son was in 5/6 grade, his teachers did a Project Linus with the kids. When I saw what they were doing, I was intrigued - and she gave me a few private rag quilt classes. When we were done - the kids' quilt went to Project Linus... Mine went to a local (unwed, young, at risk) mother. All the new moms I know have gotten one since - along with many for different charities.

  My mother taught me to sew. Then after college, I moved 1000 miles away. One day a gal at work asked two others of us if we would like to take a quilting class. Sure! It was all done by hand, templates, scissors, pencils, rulers, and it was still fun. My quilt is still not finished - I started with a king quilt.

  I can always remember my grandmother quilting. My mother started when i was about 6 years old. So I have pretty much been around quilting my entire life. When I was about 20, i found a quilt i just had to make. 1,872 little 2.5" squares, some hand embroidering of 'How do I love thee, let me count the ways..." in the borders and a lot of finger pricks from hand quilting the quilt, I am hooked. I can't even begin to count how many quilts I have made. And I have even more to make, so many UFO's, so little time.

  As a child I used to sit under the quilt frame while my grandmother and her friends would quilt. Loved it. Learned to sew when I was about 12 and been sewing ever since.

  I began quilting because I wanted to make quilts to give my children. I already loved sewing but quilts can span into heirlooms. I wanted my kids to have something special made with love they could keep for a very long time and possibly pass on!

  I watched my grandmother quilt from the a very young age. At age 7, she actually started teaching me how to quilt. That quilt was a white dove appliqued on a blue background. That was also 45 years ago. I continue quilting now in her memory, always feel her close to me when I'm quilting.

  I saw the October 2002 McCalls Quilting cover and I knew I wanted to learn to make that quilt. It was a batik log cabin and maple leaf design.

  My grandmother taught me to crochet and needle point when I was a little girl...and I've had the creative bug ever since. Bought a sewing machine years ago but only in the past three years since my daughter was born have I really started to sew and quilt. I enjoy it so much I started a quilt group at my church.

  I had seen a quilt exhibition at the Rocky Mountain Museum about 1989. I was mesmerized by the colors and patterns. Couldn't get enough. Then a friend offered to include me in a quilting group to learn how to get started. Never stopped.

  I retired after 36 years as an elementary teacher and wanted to experience the art of quilting(a hidden desire that was repressed for many years)! I love the vibrant colors, the luscious feel of fabric, and the never ending varieties of quilting blocks. I would say it's the best therapy in the world for our so called "fabric addictions". Unfortunately I have more projects than possibly time to finish all of this art but what a "ride" it's been! This teacher is still learning and loving this new adventure in life!

  I have always wanted to quilt. I had thought when I was a little girl I did a very small quilt sample. I would sit and sew along with my Grandmother and my Mother. I finally got it out of the box I had it in and it was a twin size!! I really don't remember sewing it that big but I guess I did. I was only like 8 or 9 yrs old. I also got really inspired to start quilting when I went to the Amish Country in Lancaster PA back in 2012.. Have been quilting since. Wish I could quit my day job and take up quilting full time...

  I have been in love with sewing since my mother gave me Barbie paper patterns and scraps of fabric when I was in Junior High. Won't say how long ago that was but I am retiring in three weeks and am going to bury myself in my sewing room making clothes and quilts. A lifetime dream.

  I learned to sew when I was in grade school. My maternal grandmother lived several hundred miles away, so when I was with her, we always did some kind of project. It was sewing and/or crocheting...both of which I still do today 50+ years later. My, I miss that woman!

  Last summer I decided to teach myself to quilt, and promptly chose an Irish Chain pattern to make for my mother in law's 75th birthday. I found that I loved both the making and the giving of quilts, and I haven't stopped! I've made about 12 quilts in a year!

  I grew up learning to sew my own clothes. I can't remember a time in my life that I didn't sew. As a young military bride I took a quilt class to meet people. I've met some wonderful people and have made some great friends through quilting. That was 36 years ago and I'm still making quilts! Clothes, I can't remember the last time I made any of those!

  My love of sewing started when I was in junior high/high school and scrunchiis were all the rage(25+ years ago). Not having much cash on hand, I raided my mom's fabric stash and elastic and made LOTS of them for myself. Fast forward to being an adult, I wanted to sew curtains for my house so my husband bought me a Viking machine. I taught myself how to use it and then discovered quilts. LOVE them! Great for using up stashes of fabrics and they make great baby gifts or anytime gifts. :)

  My mother made my clothes as I was growing up. When I was a little older, she started making quilts out of clothing scraps. She developed into a fantastic quilter when quilting wasn't cool. She was expert at hand appliqué and hand quilting and won many ribbons for her fiber art. She was my inspiration.

  My sister helped me make a quilt for my daughter's graduation, then my daughters wedding, then she helped me make a quilt for my first grandson, then a granddaughter, then another grandson, and another. When I retired, I bought a machine and the rest is history!

  I was inspired by my grandma, when I was around 8 years old. She sewed everyday, making something for the house or a new summer outfit for me to wear. I still to this day have pillow cases she made for me with hand embroidery on them. I hope my children will cherish the quilts I have made for them.

  My bestest friend. We both have 4 boys. She taught me a lot about sewing. It started off making clothes for the boys. Then as they got older and I had more time I finally got into patchwork. If I ever get stuck with a pattern she is there to help. She quilts now so that's a bonus for me. I look forward to my birthday and anticipate what wonderful gift has she made for me this year.

  Both of my grandmothers were seamtresses, pattern designers and couturiers. My mother made many of our clothes. I don't remember a time not wanting to sew. There was always scrap fabric and thread and needles to use. And there was a great appreciation for the handmade/handcrafted/beautiful/arts. As a young girl of 12 or so, we were taught in a youth group how to hand quilt.

  Although I have been sewing since I was a kid, I had never done any quilting. I think I was inspired by a quilt that an aunt had given me. She had been making the quilt blocks since I was a kid. The blocks included some embroidery. She knew that I knew how to embroider. When visiting her, she let me do some of the embroidery on them. When I got married, she gave me a quilt made up of these blocks. I love it. I started quilting after I retired. All my grandchildren now have quilts I made for them.

  I lost my baby boy to SIDS. 2 years ago today. I needed something constructive to do to keep my mind busy. I had never used a sewing machine ever!! Once I started I couldn't stop!!

  I always thought it was because of mother, I was sewing at9 and making my own clothes by 12, but social media and quilting groups have really got me amped...I retired, and now I am back to sewing...quilting actually...the fabrics of today and the methods are fabulous...love looking at all.

  I was inspired to quilt by my husband's grandma who lived close to Lancaster, PA. She made many quilts with her family/friends all quilted by hand---beautiful! When she passed away, I realized how wonderful it was to have one of her "works of art" to remember her by. I started sewing when I was around 8--my mom sewed all the time and I followed in her footsteps. I love the collections these days that all coordinated, especially those that Moda creates. With each new line, I am inspired to create something, and they make it sooo easy to do so! :)

  my mom and I went into a local quilt show a few years back and we marveled at the beautiful quilts. It always stuck in my mind that quilts were created by women of real skill and talent. I began seeing more and more pinterest and online tutorials and decided to give it a whirl. I am in progress making my first quilt top and I love the feeling of sewing and the relaxation I get from the hum of the machine.

  I learned to sew when I was about 10 and by high school was making some of my own clothes. Did a little bit of quilting back then, including a wedding gift for my brother and his wife. When their daughter was graduating from high school, Iasked for gift suggestions. "How about making her a quilt or some cute pillows for her college dorm room?" And in the process of making that, I found out there were wonderful tools and techniques that had emerged since the 80s. And was bitten by the quilt bug....

  I first learned to hand-sew when I was 8 years old because my brother would take all the clothes off my barbies and I wanted to e able to sew them in place so they couldn't come off!   After a tough semester of college, I sold back my used textbooks (ripoff!) and went straight to the store and bought the only machine I could afford. I taught myself to sew that summer.   I was part of an fibre artists group who do Monthly workshops. One of the workshops was hand piecing quilt blocks... an addiction was born in me instantly. I want to make all the quilts (if only time and fabric budget would allow it) but I will have a damn good try for so long as I have time to keep trying new fabrics and designs.

  When my three children where really small, I worked around the clock and had no time for myself. I wasn't in a good mood and looked for something not useful, but only nice ! At this time , I saw a simple quilt with beautiful colours - I took lessons and started to do it at home - the first years only not useful things, but beautiful to look on! It made me happy and it makes me happy also today!!!!!!!!

  I grew up with my mom sewing. A lot. The sound of scissors running on a countertop and slicing down will forever remind me of her! She passed along a skill i love to have and use, and now exposing my daughter to. She's three and we just finished her first cotton pillowcase dress.   I was never inspired exactly, I've just always done it. If anything, my mom, who taught me to sew, knit, embroider, etc. etc. I think pinterest may have inspired me to quilt though. :)

  I ran across the book Quilt in a Day, so friends and I set about seeing if that idea was really true! not quite...it took more than a day, but it sure got me started on a long-time hobby.

  I saw some quilts hanging in the window of a quilt shop when I was a teenager. I really wanted to learn how to make a quilt but thought that it looked too hard. When I grew up, I signed up for a beginning quilting class and haven't looked back.

  I think it was the idea that quilting connected me to shows like Little House on the Prairie or the Anne of Green Gables books - that love of traditional pastimes. I also love the process so that might have been it, too!

  Both my aunt and my grandmother are professional seamstresses so I've always had an interest in sewing. What attracts me personally is the combination of creativity and logic. All those hours studying maths do come in handy when altering patterns!

  I started out sewing when I was probably 12ish because I kept seeing things and thinking, "I bet I could make that." So, I think I just worked up to looking at blankets and quilts. I remember just one day looking at various quilts on pinterest and suddenly realizing, "I can do that." Though I do have quite a bit more to learn. :) Thanks for a great giveaway!

  I already receive your newsletter. I have always enjoyed handwork and when my boyfriend (now husband) went away to college, I didn't know what I was going to do on my weekends! So, I signed up for a quilting class- all hand piecing and handquilting. At that time, that was the only way I was going to make my quilts--but as my 'to make" list grew-I realized I needed to start using my machine! LOL (though I do still love EPP and some handquilting...)

  When we moved into our first house, I saw a beautiful quilt in the window of a quilt shop and I wanted it soooo bad but, I couldn't afford the quilt and my new mortgage payment. I borrowed my mother's Singer and took a class for the triple Irish chain quilt and I was hooked. That was 25 yrs ago.

  In grad school 12 years ago, I bought a thrift store table for my tv for $10. It turned out to have a singer 401 in it and I started to play around with it. It turned into a hobby and then a passion. I have a more modern machine but I still have that singer and will never get rid of it!

  I was trying to figure out a present for my brother and his new wife. He really appreciates handmade items. I decided to sew them a quilt. That was really the first thing I ever tried to sew. It took me five years. Whoops! It was too big of a project for someone who didn't really know how to sew.

  My best friend, Ann, has always been a quilter and I always admired her work. She bought me a book and some fat quarters one year for my birthday.   What inspired me with quilting was seeing all the beautiful quilts in the gift shops that I used to frequent. I also love to be able to make my family certain pieces of clothing so I learned how to sew and love doing garment sewing also. It's the satisfaction of being able to do something with my own two hands that make it fun.

  My first ever sewing project was a prairie dog stuffed animal I saw in a magazine when I was a kid. I just really wanted that prairie dog. Later, I started quilting because I had so many fabrics that I loved and didn't want to see go to waste when something was stained, outgrown, ripped, etc.

  My babies inspired me to quilt. I am a first generation, self-taught quilter. I made my first quilt 32 years ago when my first baby was on the way and the nesting instinct hit. Although I made other quilts for my babies, I did not have much time to quilt while they were growing up. When my youngest went off to college, the nesting instinct hit in reverse and I decided she had to have a handmade quilt to take off to her dorm.   I guess it was my mum. :) She was always sewing something or other. That, and I just like sitting on the couch under a blanket I've made, or seeing my kids running around in clothes I've sewn them.

  I learned to sew in an 8th grade Home Economics class. I'm not sure it was by inspiration then, more of a school requirement. It was during that class, after I got my hands on fabric and a machine, that I was inspired. I didn't have my own machine until I was married, and I sewed my maternity clothes.   When I was a child my great grandma was still alive and still quilting. I remember watching her knarled fingers sewing back and forth.   My earliest quilt experience was using the cutoff hems of knit slacks my mother was hemming to make a small patchwork. Fast forward many years, I then took an adult ed class using the rotary cutter! Wow!!!! things were never the same!

  My best friend sorta tricked me into quilting. I had to repair a batik piece I'd made for my husband years ago. She offered to help me make it into a quilt. Not long into it I realized that this was EXACTLY how my brain worked. Fabric & math & designs....she knew all along.

  I bought a sewing machine because I was tired of going to the tailor every time I needed a pair of pants hemmed. It seemed a shame to only use it for the occasional hem, so I decided to see what else was out there in the world of sewing. While flipping through patterns at Hancock's I came across a pattern for a baby quilt that would be perfect for my daughter's nursery (I was pregnant) ... I bought the pattern, went to a local quilt shop for fabric, upgraded my machine two weeks later, and haven't stopped quilting since. (that was summer 2013)

  I worked on a craft magazine (I have made stuff as long as I have been able to walk) and a quilting magazine was the sister magazine. The editor took me under her wing as I was unexperienced and knew nothing and I developed an interest from flicking through her back issues. The magazine I worked on doesn't exist anymore, but the quilting one still does and I regularly write for it now!

  Hmmm... I don't know. I remember in 7th grade sewing class we made a pillow out of a quilt block. I really enjoyed that. The first thing I ever sewed really, then in HIgh school parenting class the whole class worked on a quilt together, just basic squares. So when I had my daughter I bought a sewing machine to make her a "blanket".

  I saw a tutorial online on how to make a bag, and decided I needed to try that :) I did, I made my bag and haven't stopped since!

  I was always a crafty kid. Started cross-stitching when I was in grade school. Took dressmaking classes when I was a teenager. I met a new friend when I moved to the PacNW and we enrolled in a Beginner's Quilting class together. It's been an adventurous ride since then! Thanks for the chance to win a fun bundle!

  A friend of mine inspired me to start making patchwork. But I think my mum was the very first reason I started sewing :-)

  My grandma was a furrier, and was always sewing. She'd piece together tiny scraps and make pillows. She inspired me to make do, (although I like to fabric shop), and I taught myself to make modern quilts to keep people warm. Functional and practical. She'd have been proud.

  I've always sewn. My mother and grandmother taught me and my sisters to sew. I can't imagine not sewing. I sewed a totebag Tuesday that I am giving away for SMS. Thanks for the giveaway.

  My great-grandmother's quilts inspired me as a child. When I was twelve I tried to copy a butterfly quilt she had made. I still have the unfinished blocks - my first UFO!

  A lovely bundle! I was pregnant with my first child. And that child was going to need a quilt :) I'm a sef-taught quilter, but got 'the bug' from my Grandma.

  My grandma used to make cross stitched quilts from pre printed blocks--- doesn't sound good but they were amazing and she would quilt them by hand. I don't have that kind of patience but, I love making quilts from fabrics. each of my nieces and nephews have at least 2

  My kids pushed me to keep quilting after I made a memory quilt for them when their father and I divorced. I know that sounds silly, but the quilt was from scraps of projects I had made for home that we lost in the divorce, halloween costumes, curtains for every room, chair cushions. Little did my kids know they were encouraging an obsessive behavior.!

  I saw a double wedding ring when I was a kid, and I knew I wanted to make one some day! I still haven't, but I will one of these days. :)
