Stocking Row
- Gather the specified materials listed in your Christmas Row Quilt Pattern.
- Follow the cutting and piecing instructions.
You’ll be piecing five festive Stocking Blocks in this step! Once completed, sew the blocks and sashings together to form the second row of your cheerful Christmas Row Quilt.

Patty’s Tips for the Stocking Row:
-
Mind Your Prints: When measuring and cutting fabrics for the Stocking Row, pay close attention to the direction of your prints—especially if you're using directional fabrics.
-
Seam with Care: When joining the left and right top sections of the Stocking Blocks, begin stitching from the top of the block with the right-side section facing up. This helps keep the corner triangle seam flat and tidy. (See image above for reference.)
-
Plan Ahead: Before cutting the block pieces from C120-Golden, flip to Step 7 on page 13 of your pattern. Cut the strips needed for the inner border and binding first, then set them aside for later use.

Pattern Note: The fabric requirements listed on the back of the Christmas Row Quilt Pattern for the Up on the Housetop fabric prints reference width-of-fabric (WOF) yardage, but the cutting instructions refer to fat quarters instead.
We reached out to LaVonne, the pattern designer, and learned that the test quilt was made using non-directional fabrics. When the yardage requirements were later updated, the needs of directional fabrics weren’t taken into account.
If you purchased our Christmas Row Up on the Housetop Quilt Kit, don’t worry—only the Stocking Row is affected. Patty has provided helpful substitution tips below to keep you on track. All other rows work out just fine!
Patty's Suggested Quilt Kit Substitution Tips:
- Since some fabrics for the Stocking Row are directional (horizontal and vertical), substitutions need to be made for the first and third stocking. There are plenty of fabrics in the kit to accomplish this.
- For the first stocking use C14734-Midnight, instead of C14736-Midnight.
- For the third stocking use C14732-Snowflake, instead of C14736-Snowflake.
Another great option is to use fabrics from your stash as substitutions.
