Summer Picnic Quilt Sew-Along: Month 3

Welcome to September! Labor Day weekend has come and gone and the kids are headed back to school. This month, as I continue with my Summer Picnic Quilt , I am excited to see progress as I finish up all the needed Flower Basket Blocks. Let's continue our Sew-Along journey together. |

Here is where I left off last month. I have all my Flower Blocks created. Now it's time to finish the basket portion. |
For each basket block, you will need 2 - white rectangles, 1 - white square, and 2 - blue/white Half Square Triangles (HST). Since I am using small scraps for my blue baskets, I used Make 2-At-A-Time Half-Square Triangles. You will need 2 - 2 1/2" squares, a white fabric and a blue fabric, to make 2 Half Square Triangles. (If you are making more and have a larger pieces of fabric, you could use the Make 8-At-A-Time method.) Draw a diagonal line from one corner to the other corner. (I pin so the fabric does not shift.) Sew a scant 1/4" seam on both sides of the drawn line. Press. Cut on the drawn line. |
You can press the HSTs open and square them up with a regular ruler to the needed size listed in the pattern book. |
I place my pieces on a design board for ease of keeping my pieces orientated correctly as I sew them together. |
I pieced unit A and B together, pressing towards unit B. |
I then pieced unit C, D, and E together. I pressed my seams towards the center D unit. This allows me to nest when attaching this unit to the Flower Block. I attached this unit to the Flower Block pressing towards the outside. |
Yeah! Now I am ready to start sewing my Flower Basket Blocks into 4 Block Units. This is where I feel the quilt will really start coming together. |
